Estar estudando, correndo, sorrindo…

As construções formadas com o verbo ‘estar‘ (verbo auxiliar) mais um verbo principal no gerúndio (estudando, cantando, comendo, lendo) são chamadas na Gramática da Língua Portuguesa de Locução Verbal (pelo menos é um dos tipos de locução verbal).

O uso que fazemos desta tal Locução Verbal (estar + gerúndio) – pelo menos aqui no Brasil – é assim:

  1. Estou estudando inglês neste momento.
  2. Estou estudando inglês faz 2 anos.
  3. Estou estudando inglês há 2 anos.
  4. Estou estudando inglês desde 2005.

Você consegue perceber a diferença de uso nas sentenças acima? Consegue notar que na sentença 1 o falante refere-se a uma ação que ocorre neste momento? Geralmente, usamos também a palavra ‘agora‘ ou ainda ‘neste exato momento‘. Já nas sentenças 2, 3 e 4 o falante refere-se a algo que ele está fazendo já faz algum tempo. Ele começou a ação há algum tempo atrás e continua fazendo-a até agora.

Você consegue perceber estas diferenças? É muito importante percebê-las em português para poder saber traduzir estas sentenças para o inglês. Principalmente, para poder usar dois tempos verbais da língua inglesa: Present Continuous e Present Perfect Continuous.

Na sentença 1, como nos referimos a algo que está acontecendo ‘agora’ (now), ‘neste momento’ (at this moment), ‘neste exato momento’ (at this very moment), etc devemos usar o Present Continuous:

  • I am studying English at this moment. (Sentença 1)

Já nas demais devemos usar o Present Perfect Continuous:

  • I have been studying English for two years. (Sentenças 2 e 3)
  • I have been studying English since 2005. (Sentença 4)

Onde está o outro segredo? Como posso perceber a diferença de outro jeito? Bom, para ver as coisas por outro ângulo veja que nas Sentenças 2, 3 e 4 em português nós também usamos os marcadores ‘faz’, ‘há’ e ‘desde’ (acompanhados de uma expressão de tempo ‘2 anos’ e ‘2005’).

Conclusão, se em português as palavrinhas ‘faz’, ‘há’ e ‘desde’ são usadas com a locução verbal (estar + gerúndio), então em inglês o correto vai ser usar o Present Perfect Continuous. Veja mais alguns exemplos:

  • Eu estou escrevendo FAZ 20 minutos. = I have been writing FOR 20 minutes.
  • Ele está morando aqui HÁ 10 anos. = He has been living here FOR 10 years.
  • Nós estamos trabalhando lá DESDE 1990. = We have been working there SINCE 1990.
