Vamos dar uma olhada em vocabulário referente à maquiagem (make up) e como aplicá-la em um passo-a-passo (how to apply make up step-by-step).

  • use, wear make-up (usar maquiagem): I never wear make-up to go to work (Eu nunca uso maquiagem para ir ao trabalho)
  • apply, do, put on (fazer maquiagem): It’s always important to cleanse, tone and moisturize your face before applying make-up (É sempre importante limpar, tonificar e hidratar a pele antes de fazer a maquiagem)
  • remove, take off, wash off (retirar a maquiagem): There is one beauty tip everyone agrees on: you have to remove all your make-up at night before going to bed (Se tem uma dica de beleza que todo mundo concorda é: retire toda a maquiagem à noite antes de dormir)
  • Dark make-up, light make-up (maquiagem escura, maquiagem clara): Dark make-up makes your eyes stand out and usually requires pale lips, such as gloss (Maquiagem escura ressalta os olhos e geralmente requer lábios neutros, e uma boa pedida é o gloss)

Por fim, um passo-a-passo de maquiagem básica:]

  1. Apply concealer (aplique o corretivo). First of all you have to prepare your face to absorb the make up and not melt, vanish or fade with sweat.
  2. Apply foundation (aplique a base). Find one that is closest to your skin tone. Use your middle finger to dab little spots on your forehead, cheeks, nose, chin and neck and then spread and blend it over (Encontre uma base que se aproxime mais do seu tom de pele. Espalhe e misture bem.)
  3. Apply powder (passe o pó). Pat powder on all areas of your face and neck to set your foundation and concealer (Aplique o pó com batidinhas em todas as áreas do rosto e pescoço para dar o acabamento depois da base e do corretivo)
  4. Apply eyeshadow (passe a sombra). Using a brush, apply the color of your preference all over your eyelid.
  5. Apply eyeliner (passe o lápis/delineador). Draw a thin line as close to the lashes as possible from inside your eyes to the outer corner.(Desenhe uma linha fina o mais próximo dos cílios que conseguir. Faça o desenho de dentro para fora)
  6. Apply mascara. (aplique o rímel). Apply mascara on the upper and lower eyelashes several times in thin layers.
  7. Apply blush (passe o blush). Lightly brush across the apple of your cheeks in thin layers (Passe o pincel com o blush suavemente nas maçãs do rosto em camadas finas)
  8. Apply lipstick or lip gloss (passe o batom ou gloss). Put on the lipstick or lip gloss in the color of your preference and blend your lips together.
  9. And… you’re done! The result is really amazing: perfect and flawless make-up (maquiagem perfeita e sem falha) in less than five minutes.

Well, that’s all for today, girls (and boys). I hope you’ve enjoyed today’s beauty tip. Take care and see you next time.

  1. I work part-time as a make up artist (and English teacher) and I'd say that the most common word for "iluminador" is highlighter, at least in American English.
It was a great idea to have a make up tutorial in English, but I disagree on the order of the steps and how it was written. Usually when you do your makeup (or someone else's), the first step (if you decide not to use primer) is to apply foundation and THEN concealer. If it's done the other way around, you are likely to have too much make up around the eye area causing it to cake or crease, which makes you look older!
The way the eyeliner application is described, it doesn't really make sense. I've never heard anyone say "blend your lips together"… I would say to rub your lips together to distribute product evenly.

    1. Hi Eliana!

First I'd like to thank you for participating here in the blog. As for your observations, what I have to say is:

      1) You're right to point out that the order of the steps can be interchangeable. There are some make-up designers who say that we have to apply foundation first while others say that the concealer can come first. I've heard both options, I'm telling you 🙂
      2) The description of the eyeliner application is quite incomplete and vague and that happened for the sake of space. You know that for a detailed description of how to apply eyeliner we should have a much bigger sentence and it would probably exceed the limit of the space we have to write here.
      3) Last but not least, the expression "blend your lips together" does make some sense to me. I heard it from an American make-up designer who works at a very famous cosmetics store in the USA, where I went once to take a quick make-up application course.

Remember that language is a live mechanism and several possibilities on how to say "this" or "that" can emerge 🙂

      Take care!!!

    2. I think that this post was made to help you to know the names of the stuffs and not a make up course, so u don't need to choose here what you are going to wear or no.

  2. I just love wearing make-up. There are lots of video tutorials in English (on Youtube) and I've seen a plenty of them. And it's a really good way students (girls) can learn vocabulary and practice listening. For me it's combining business to pleasure. (?)

  3. This post was wonderful but i think you should let it clear the differences among these 3 words: Make Up – Makeup & Made-up.

Make Up: (n) means the stuffs you put on your face (eyeliner, lipstick…), or something that u'll remake (exam, test….)
Makeup: (v) this word you use to wear the stuffs u bought (i will wear a nice makeup tonight), or to create something…!
Made-up: (it's always written maDE), made up story…!

I loved your website and thanx for doin' this with LOVE. bye bye

  4. "luminizer"???? By the way, here's a video in which a girl teaches how to apply highlighter http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qAbxkhZAxG4 Apesar disso, adorei o post e espero que escrevam mais sobre essas futilidades que amaamos! ; )

  5. Oi Denise!
