O que significa pet peeve?

Conversando com uma amiga dia atrás, ouvi-a dizer “I have a pet peeve” e continuou sua sentença. Prometi a ela que usaria a expressão aqui no blog para explicar a todos o que vem a ser um pet peeve. Uma expressão simples, mas bem curiosa e que vale a pena estar na ponta da sua língua.

Pet peeve Não tem nada a ver com animal de estimação [pet]. E para ficar mais interessante, saiba que de nada adianta sair correndo para procurar a palavra peeve no seu dicionário. Afinal, as duas costumam sempre aparecer juntas.

Enfim, chega de conversa fiada! Anote aí que pet peeve é uma expressão usada para se referir a algo bobo que irrita as pessoas de uma forma estranha. Não irrita ao ponto de querer quebrar tudo, mas irrita por ser algo que incomoda. Por exemplo, há pessoas que odeiam o modo como o papel higiênico [toilet paper] é colocado no banheiro [olhe a figura aí!]. Se a pessoa entra no banheiro e vê o papel higiênico do lado que ela considera errado, ela pode ficar com raiva disso e reclamar. Veja que se trata de uma coisa boba, mas que irrita. Essa coisa boba é o que chamamos de pet peeve.

Outro exemplo de pet peeve é quando alguém na sua casa não lava a louça [copos, talheres, pratos, etc] que utiliza e vai deixando acumular para que outra pessoa lave depois. é uma coisa boba com a qual se irritar, mas muita gente se irrita. Trata-se de um pet peeve.

Essa expressão pode ser traduzida de modos diferentes. Tudo dependerá de como melhor ficar no contexto:

One of my pet peeves is typos. (Uma das coisas que me deixa irritado são os errinhos de digitação.)
This is just a pet peeve of mine. (É só uma implicância minha.)
What is your pet peeve? (O que costuma te deixar irritado?)

De modo geral, um pet peeve costuma referir-se ao comportamento de uma outra pessoa: amigo, cônjuge, membro da família, colega de trabalho, etc. Esses comportamentos podem envolver falta de respeito, modos, higiene pessoal, palavras sendo usadas e coisas do tipo. Para a maioria das pessoas é uma bobeira, mas para a pessoa que tem o pet peeve é algo relativamente sério.

A palavra ‘pet‘ está na expressão apenas para mostrar que aquela é a sua reclamação ou implicância favorita. É algo que te acompanha e as demais pessoas acham que é uma bobagem! Só isso! Por fim, que tal usar a área de comentários para responder à pergunta What’s your pet peeve? Vamos ver se a gente descobre que tem um pet peeve mais interessante que o outro. Ah sim! Anote aí que algumas pessoas também dizem pet hate no lugar de pet peeve. Como um extra veja o vídeo abaixo!

My pet peeve is when I get to my car, retrieving from a place, usually my work, and I find it full of those advertisement papers. I hate it… and everyday I have to take 'em off! When it rains, they get like glued n' I hate this more n' more.How I'd like that the damn politicians vote a law to avoid people from setting those papers in cars…! Hi DENILSOBem, creio que eu seja o rei dos pet peeves.eu não gosto de raspar os talheres nas unhas quando lavo louças ou quando alguém os morde.Tabém nao gosto quando alguém rói as unhas.Ah, deixar a cadeira fora do lugar depois da refeição também me irrita.Pessoas que ficam paradas nas portas também não são minhas preferidas.Acho que essas são as piores.

My pet peeve (pet hate) is when I see a person that´s near me with a so bad mood and this person goes on with that mood until the end of the day, what makes me think that is because of me that he/she is in that way.

Ah, sim! Sabe qdo a pessoa acaba de esvaziar o seu carrinho do supermercado e na cara de pau manda o mesmo para trás da fila de gente que aguarda empurrando outros carrinhos que também serão largados no espaço onde se formam as filas. Por que não passam com o carrinho e deixam de volta no local correto?? Já ouvi gente dizer que isso tiraria o trabalho do funcionário que é pago para isso!! Ora bolas! Que absurdo!

Denilson, achei interessante a sua explicação sobre o termo "pet peeve". Porém, aqui vai uma correção: a palavra "peeve" pode se encontrada no dicionário inglês-português do Antonio Houaiss (Webster's) e significa exatamente "irritar, aborrecer, agastar". Vale conferir.

I' ve been in contact with English for many many years and one thing I have noticed is that for a lot of expressions in English we don't have a similar one in Portuguese, one that has a similar meaning or something like that. Pet peeve is quite one of them.This makes me wonder if Portuguese is kind of poor compared with English. It seems to me that English has a much bigger vocabulary. What do you guys think?
