Club tells pensioner to break wind outside

[Bar pede a pensionista para soltar puns do lado de fora]

A retired [aposentado] bus driver who has drunk [que vem bebendo] in the same social club for 20 years has been told [foi solicitado] to step outside [a dar uma saidinha] when he breaks wind [soltar puns], because his flatulence is “disgusting” [causando nojo aos] other customers.

Maurice Fox, 77, was handed a formal letter of warning [recebeu uma carta formal de aviso] from his club committee [do comitê do seu clube] after “several complaints” from patrons [após "várias reclamações" dos membros].

The widower has agreed to comply with the request [concordou em atender o pedido] but claims he received no verbal warning [notificação verbal] from staff at Kirkham Street Sports and Social Club in Paignton, Devon, where he is an honorary life member.

“I do get a bit windy – I am an old fart now,” he said. [Eu realmente fico um pouco frouxo - sou um velho peidão agora]

“They can be a bit loud at times [Pode ser um pouco barulhento às vezes]. If I’ve got time and know they are coming I pop into the porch inside the door [eu dou um pulinho na entrada pelo lado de fora],” he told the South Devon Herald Express newspaper.

Mr Fox said that he had tried to calm his flatulence [diminuir a incidência de flatulências] by switching from cider to bitter [mudando de bebida], but admitted that the six pints of Bass he drinks a day still leave him feeling gassy [as seis 'canecas' de Bass que ele toma por dia ainda o deixam se sentindo gaseificado].

He added that his problem causes less of a fuss of [causa menos confusão] in the men-only environment [ambiente apenas para homens] of another local club, Palace Place.

“I can let go when I like [Posso deixar sair quando bem quiser] at the Palace. It’s more relaxed, and so am I [É mais solto, e eu também],” he told the newspaper.

The letter of warning, signed by club secretary George Shepherd “for and behalf of the committee” [em nome do comitê], read: “After several complaints regarding [relacionadas a] your continual breaking of wind (farting) [sua contínua ação flatulenta {peidos} while in the club, would you please consider that your actions are considered disgusting to fellow members and visitors [o senhor deveria considerar que suas ações são tidas como nojentas aos demais membros e visitantes].

“You sit close to the front door, so would you please go outside when required. So please take heed of this request.” [Sente-se perto da porta, assim o senhor poderia se retirar quando for solicitado. Desta forma, por favor leve esta solicitação à sério.]

Mr Fox, who also used to work at Heathrow Airport as a fork lift driver [motorista de empilhadeira], lives alone on nearby Princess Street. His wife Pam died seven years ago.

I've always looked up for those words at dictinaries to teach my students and I've never found them the way they were published on South Devon Herald Express newspaper.So, my dear teacher Denilson, thanks for the information.I totally agree when it's said you have to learn everything about a language and the culture of its speakers.Well, if it was reported in a journal in The UK, why can't we learn about those words or idioms?By the way, are we only supposed to learn what are on books? Well, I don't think so."The action 'break a wind' is disgusting, but the report or the information isn't at all".Teacher Denilson, thanks again for sharing one more pearl with us.

Ai que triste isso, hahaha..Engraçado é que quando li o título, pensei que era "puns" em inglês, de trocadilhos… e coincidentemente, tem um trocadillho bem interessante nessa história, quando o cara fala "I'm an old fart." Por incrível que pareça, a expressão "old fart" é bastante usada e quer dizer simplesmente "velho." Até hoje lembro a primeira vez que ouvi isso, estava trabalhando (vendendo ticket pra esquiar) e tinha um preço diferenciado para "senior citizens." O primeiro cara que perguntou quanto custava o senior ticket com a frase "How much is it for an old fart?" me fez rir horrores, até que depois eu vi que era até comum essa expressão. =)
